State Sen. Bill Hightower, R-Mobile, raised about $271,000 for his campaign for governor, according to his monthly report filed today with the Secretary of State's office.
The contributions come on top of the $170,000 Hightower raised in June, the first month candidates could raise money for next year's elections. The total of $441,000 is likely to place Hightower among the leaders in fundraising for the governor's race so far. Hightower raised more in July than Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, who had led all the candidates in June.
Today is the deadline for candidates to file their monthly reports.
Among Hightower's largest contributors in July were BWR Co. LLC of Delaware; DC Co. LLC of Delaware; Real Estate Equity Investments LLC of Mobile and Theodore Industrial Port. They all gave $25,000 contributions.
Hightower has not officially announced that he will run.

“The financial and volunteer support I am receiving is very encouraging, and it’s coming from all across Alabama," said Bill Hightower. "It is a clear indication that my conservative credentials and work ethic resonates with Alabamians, who want real change in how Montgomery works."
